I AM: Robed Week Six - Day Four

Before we dive into today’s study, let’s put the last three days together.

We have seen God reaching out to man to establish a covenant, a binding agreement that cannot be broken and is everlasting. This covenant with Abram was cut in blood.

In the account of David and Jonathan, we saw a covenant between two men that involved the exchange of a robe (plus some other items, but that is another study)! The exchanged robe indicated an exchange of identity. We saw Jonathan living out covenant and defending David even when his father, Saul, wanted David dead.

Finally, we looked at the New Testament where we read about putting on the Lord Jesus Christ, making our allegiance to Him above all others including ourselves. So what does all of this mean for us?

Take a minute and read Galatians 3:26-29.

What do you see that reminds you of putting on a robe?

Have you clothed yourself with Christ?

Did you see the connection to God’s covenant with Abram in verse 29? If we belong to Christ, then we are Abraham’s offspring—just like God promised in Genesis 17:4-6.

Now check out Romans 13:14. What do you observe?

You have been clothed with Christ, yet here we’re told to put on the Lord Jesus Christ making no provision for the flesh. See the exchange of identity?

Ephesians 4:22-24 is packed full of what we lay aside and what we put on. Make a list of what you learn about each.

Let’s put it all together:

Read Hebrews 2:14-17. What does Jesus do and why?

According to Hebrews 2:14, what “robe” of ours did Jesus take on so that He might render the devil powerless?

Is it sinking in? We are robed in Christ’s righteousness because He put on our robe of flesh and blood and gave us His cloak of righteousness! Not only that but when He took our robe of sin, He robed us in His cloak together with Him. When we chose Him, we chose to get rid of our cloak of flesh and its desires and put on His righteousness.

This is covenant. It is a fulfillment of one of the covenant promises to Abram plus the beginning of a new covenant through Jesus Christ—we’re seeing that grace again, aren’t we? In the same way God approached Noah and Abram with a covenant, so He approached us through His Son Jesus Christ. We didn’t ask for it, we didn’t deserve it, but if we choose to listen to His call “to come and follow Him,” He does all the work of robing us in undeserved righteousness. This covenant with Jesus is unconditional, everlasting, and was cut through the blood of the perfect Lamb of God.

Cutting covenant is serious business. If you have any question about how seriously God takes it, you need only think for a moment about Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross at the hands of sinful men. God has given all in covenant!
